  Nils Greenhow

composition

Beginning his musical journey as a cellist and trumpeter, Nils has been an active composer all his musical life. Whilst still at school, he composed an Oboe Concerto, premiered by the Royal Grammar School Orchestra with Jacob Reading as soloist. In 2007, he received a commission from the Misbourne Symphony Orchestra which resulted in the composition Epic for Strings.

After leaving school, Nils studied Composition at Birmingham Conservatoire with Ed Bennett and Joe Cutler. During this time he focused on the genre of electronic composition. He completed his studies at the University of York, where he continued to study composition whilst furthering his studies as a singer.

Since graduating, Nils has continued to flourish as one of London's most exciting young composers. In 2014, his setting of the Preces & Responses was commissioned and performed live on BBC Radio 3's Choral Evensong by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields. In 2015, he was commissioned by the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music to compose a setting of Factum Est Silentium for the Choir of St Michael and All Angels, Bedford Park.  Later that year, a setting of the Canticles, Psalm Chant and a communion anthem were performed by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and a Christmas Carol was commissioned and performed by Eboracum Baroque in Münster Dom.

In 2017 Nils was appointed as Composition Fellow at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London. Recent work includes the BBC Radio 4 Ascension Day broadcast of his composition O Clap Your Hands for choir and orchestra, performed by the St Martin's Voices Fellows, the BBC Daily Service Singers and the Southbank Sinfonia.
